Things To Consider For Your Home Surveillance System

One of the best ways to feel safe at home is to have security surveillance cameras installed. As any locksmith in Nyack will tell you, having a security system watching your house 24/7 will help you sleep better at night.

The presence of cameras should deter criminals from even trying anything to do at your home. And if anything should happen such as break-ins or robberies, you have something to show law enforcement to help them catch the criminals.

But while there are plenty of home security systems with cameras that you can have installed, you might be wondering what you should look for before having a Rockland locksmith install one in your home.

Well, not to worry: this article is for you. In no particular order, we’ll take a look at the factors you need to consider before you buy anything or have anything connected.

Let’s get to it, shall we?

1. Why do you need a camera in the first place?

You need security cameras for home, yes, but what’s your primary reason for having a system installed? Is it because you live in an area that has a high crime rate or you constantly have missing packages? If that’s the case, you might want a higher-level security system installed.

Or is it more that you want to keep tabs on your babysitter while you’re at the office? Then you might not need something super high tech.

Knowing your true purpose for getting a camera will help you decide on the kind of system you will get installed.

2.  Does it come with a smartphone app?

Technology nowadays has made it possible for security systems to be connected to your smartphone. Just download the app, make sure you have an Internet connection, and you’re good to go.

Of course, understandably, that kind of tech will be a bit more expensive. Sure, there are some surveillance cameras that don’t have that kind of tech and might be cheaper, but would you really want to risk your security just to save up on money?

3. Does it have night vision?

As we mentioned above, security should be 24/7. If there’s an 24-hour locksmith in NJ, then why can’t it be the same for your surveillance systems, right?

However, for a system to be truly watching your property for 24 hours, it should be able to deal with low light or no light at all. Remember, criminals usually strike at night. What use would you security system be if it won’t be able to pick up images jus because it’s dark?

4. Does it have two-way audio?

Some cameras have no audio recording. And for some people, that serves their purposes. But what about you? You might prefer getting cameras that not only record images but also capture audio.

For example, you might want to hear if your babysitter is really talking to your kids in a nice way. Or if there’s somebody loitering around outside your house, you might want to hear what they’re saying, in case they’re planning something bad.

But why is the two-way audio necessary? Well, for security purposes, it’s a great way of unsettling people who are planning to do less than pleasant things to your home. For example, if you have proof that a guy is planning to break into your house at night, you can wait for that guy to appear and then talk to him via the two-way audio. Tell him you have him on camera and you’ll be calling the police.

If that doesn’t send him running away into the night, screaming, we don’t know what will!

And going back to the babysitter example, in case she IS NOT nice to your kids, you can easily make her go away with the audio. And she won’t try to do anything either,  as you’re recording everything on camera, which you can use to press charges just in case.

5.  Does it have a lot of video storage?

Your home security system will be useless if it can’t store a lot of data. Imagine, even if you have the highest of resolutions, if no action is captured on storage whatsoever, then the cameras have no purpose.

If the cameras do not have built-in high storage, then make sure that it can at least handle high capacity memory cards. It will not be practical if you have to keep changing memory cards or hard drives just because the storage got full right away. So much for having a restful sleep, eh?

6. How wide is the field of view and where is it installed?

It’s a given that the cameras you get should be able to capture as much of the area as possible. That will keep you as safe as can be.

However, if the camera isn’t wide, and then you install it in an area that has plenty of blindspots, then the camera will end up being useless.

In short, not only should you get cameras that can capture wide angles, you should also make sure to install it in an area that is not covered by anything. That way, you know that you will be recording everything that needs to be recorded.

7. How durable is the system you’re getting?

One important thing you have to know about the system you’ll get, especially if it’s outdoors, is that if it will still work, say after strong rains or heavy snow. The more durable ones are more expensive, but we’ll tell your right now, they’re worth the investment.

You might be tempted to save money by getting cheaper systems. But in saving, you might end up spend more. Why?

Well, some cheaper systems are durable, but not all are. You end up wasting money just trying to find out which ones will last. Isn’t it better to just invest in brands that you know will be working for many years to come?
