Home Security Tips – Ways to Secure Your Home

Your family home. It’s your fortress. It’s your sanctuary. It’s the place you go to relax after a long day at work. It’s where you are surrounded by the people you love, the most important people in your life. That’s why if ever it gets broken into, you will feel very much violated.

And sadly, there’s really a good chance of that happening nowadays. According to the FBI, a burglary happens every 30 seconds in the United States. And while that is an alarming fact, you don’t have to be afraid. There are many ways to secure your house, deter would-be invaders, and create a safe environment for your family.

In no particular order, here are some home security tips that will protect your home against criminals.

Keep your front door secure at all times.

Your door is the most obvious target for any home invader. After all, it’s where you go in and out. Why would the invader make it hard for themselves? It’s the easiest way to access your house. Therefore, that’s the first thing you should secure. Make sure your door frames are strong and that your hinges are in good condition. If your door has a mail slot, make sure no one can reach through it and unlock your door.

We suggest hiring a locksmith and further reinforcing your door. You can have another lock added, or install a deadbolt for when you’re inside the house. You can also have a strike plate added. We feel one of the best suggestions is to get a combination lock for the front door. Just make sure to remember your combination!

Lock and reinforce your windows.

Windows are another easy way to get inside your house. Aside from doors, windows are actually common entry points for criminals. You may close the windows but forget to lock them, so make sure you do, especially when you’re not around. And because windows are made of glass, they’re easy to break. We’re sure you’ve watched plenty of movies where windows were broken or cut into quietly. That happening is a very real possibility.

To deter criminals from breaking your windows, you can reinforce the glass with window security film. You can also install glass break sensors, which will alert you if your windows are broken. Another option is installing window sensors. When a window is opened, you can get alerted via text.

Add CCTV cameras to your house.

You won’t be able to see everything at once in your house. You only have two eyes after all. But that won’t matter if you have cameras set up in various areas of the house. Make sure to install cameras at blind spots; it’s probably best to get a security professional to evaluate your house. And nowadays, it’s possible to see through your cameras via a phone app. That way, even if you’re not at home, you can see whatever is happening in and outside of your house. When common criminals spot cameras guarding any property, that usually turns them off of the idea of breaking in.

Get a dog.

A dog is a man’s best friend, right? If you can afford one, why not get a dog to further secure your home? A mere sign saying “Beware of dog” on your lawn will usually turn away anyone with evil intentions. Any invader seeing a dog guarding your house will decide that robbing you is more trouble than it’s worth. Even a small dog can be an effective deterrent to a potential burglar. The noisier, the better! The more attention a dog can draw to a criminal, the less likely the criminal will proceed with his plan. Of course, make sure to get a breed that’s not too friendly with people. The dog might end up befriending the invader, and that’s not going to keep your home safe.

Add lights.

You don’t have to worry about criminals if you have plenty of outdoor lighting. Put lights around your whole house. Not only will you keep intruders away but you’ll be able to see better at night too!

Be friends with your neighbors.

Your neighbors are more likely to have the same concerns as you when it comes to safety. They are also some of the least likely people to want to rob you and your home. Befriend them and make them another line of defense when it comes to protecting your property. Not only will you gain friends, but you’ll also get more eyes on your house, especially when you’re not there. You can also return the favor when they are the ones who have to step out. Also, it’s easier to notice a stranger in the neighborhood if you know everyone.

Keep valuables inside your home.

You know that expensive bike you own? If you leave it outside your home, you are basically telling people to rob you. If you can, keep all your items inside your house or put them somewhere that can’t be seen easily. You want to avoid tempting criminal elements to rob you. Worse, if they feel that you have more expensive items inside your house, they might plan to rob you again.

Landscape with your safety in mind.

Look at your property, especially your backyard and your lawn. Are there any overgrown bushes? Are there any trees that look climbable? Can anyone hide in the tree branches? Is there too much tall grass? Any one of these spots is a hiding place for thieves. Clear them away and check other possible hiding spots. For example, a decorative rock formation could be a good spot for a determined thief. The fewer hiding areas you can give invaders, the better.
